Student assessment and its contribution to designing an open school
Abstract
Due to globalisation and the unprecedented circumstances arising from the recent Covid-19 pandemic, the need for educational reforms and a shift towards openness has come to the fore. Openness affirms the character of education as a basic Human Right, providing equity in educational opportunities and reinforcing democratic ideas. However, schools are moving towards this direction at a particularly slow pace and rarely adopt openness practices, maintaining their closed and outdated character. Student assessment, as an integral part of the learning process, has the potential to reinforce both the open and closed character of the modern school. Thus, the purpose of this article is to examine, through a literature review, how openness in assessment can be implemented and contribute to the creation of an open school, which aims at the overall improvement of students rather than their grade ranking. The main findings of our research show that, based on the alternative forms of assessment already implemented in distance education, schools have the potential to move towards the adoption of similar practices of openness in student assessment in order to foster the cultivation of 21st century skills, as well as the values of democracy and equity.
