The Role of the Mentor in Open and Distance Higher Education: Opportunities and Challenges in the Professional Development of Teaching Staff. A Case Study at Τhe Open University, United Kingdom
Abstract
This study explores the role of the mentor in supporting teaching staff in Open and Distance Higher Education, through a case study at the Open University (UK). Based on an in-depth semi-structured interview with an experienced mentor, the findings reveal key practices, skills, and challenges involved in academic mentoring. The mentor acts as a bridge between the academic institution and tutors, fostering professional autonomy, pedagogical coherence, and a culture of collaboration. Mentoring emerges as a mechanism of formative evaluation, reflective dialogue, and professional development. For the Hellenic Open University, the paper proposes a pilot mentoring scheme, supported by digital tools, to ensure teaching quality and sustainable tutor support.
