Critical Pedagogy in Practice: Prospects for Open and Distance Education
Abstract
This paper aims to link the theoretical basis of Critical Pedagogy with the principles and practices of Open and Distance Education. Based on Paulo Freire's theory and his reflections on the "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" and the "Pedagogy of Liberation," it analyzes how the educational system reproduces inequalities under the influence of (neo)liberalism and political conservatism. Contrasting the "banking" model of education with a pedagogical approach based on dialogue, equity, and critical thinking, Open and Distance Education is presented as a more democratic form of education. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of educational material, student autonomy, and practices that promote participation, accessibility, and social justice. Finally, it is argued that Open and Distance Education can serve as a practical basis for the application of Critical Pedagogy, bridging theory and practice and providing fertile ground for social transformation. This connection creates the conditions for the development of a contemporary theory of openness, oriented towards liberating education in the 21st century.
