Artificial intelligence in the service of open and distance education for flexible and sustainable lifelong learning: the role of universities in the age of the digital economy
Abstract
This study explores the crucial role of the fourth industrial revolution and artificial intelligence in open and distance education, along with their effects on the evolution of work. It highlights the importance of encouraging lifelong learning and improving digital skills in the context of AI. The research examines how technological advancements shape our social and economic landscapes, pointing out the new challenges and opportunities that arise in work, education, and lifelong learning. Moreover, it underscores the need for flexible learning pathways and the ''third mission'' of universities, taking advantage of open and distance education through various AI applications to promote social inclusion and cater to the educational needs of individuals across all age groups. By providing a comparative look at global practices and policies, such as Massive Open Online Courses, the recognition of prior learning, and micro-credentials that support lifelong learning, the study concludes that universities must evolve into lifelong learning institutions. This change is essential for them to meet the needs of today’s society and the fast-changing job market in the context of AI and the digital economy, thereby aiding in sustainable development.
