Abstract

The main objective of this article is to investigate the persistent educational challenges faced by Roma students across Europe, manifesting as limited access, low learning outcomes, and high dropout rates. These challenges stem from complex socioeconomic, structural, and cultural factors, as well as systemic discrimination, highlighting the imperative for adopting innovative educational approaches. The study explores the potential of utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and distance education (DE) to enhance the education of Roma students, focusing on applications in the digital learning environment. AI offers potential applications for learning personalization, targeted support, and data analysis. DE can broaden access and provide flexibility, overcoming geographical barriers. The combination of AI and DE presents significant opportunities for teaching personalization, enhancing active participation, and preventing school dropout. However, effective and ethically grounded integration necessitates addressing critical challenges: the digital divide (access to equipment/internet), the need for culturally and linguistically appropriate materials, boosting digital literacy, managing ethical issues (data, bias), and systematic teacher training. Successful implementation requires a holistic approach, ensuring technological access, developing suitable content, collaborating with communities, and integrating these efforts into national policies that combat discrimination.
