Abstract

The dissemination of learning objects through internet in an intelligent way, may contribute to the enhancement of several services offered by e-learning environments. Towards this direction, the use of a knowledge organization system, able to properly characterize and manage the vast amount of educational material, seems to play a key role. Nevertheless, not all existing knowledge organization systems fit all cases. Although similar in many points, each such system has its own special features that render it suitable for only a few cases. Having these in mind, within the framework of this work we try to find the best possible technique for modeling a knowledge domain. We accomplish this task by comparing the main characteristics of the most important structures, aiming at modeling knowledge. For the time being, we apply the selected knowledge organization system for representing the knowledge taught by a certain distance learning course and see how well does this technique behave. Our further intention is to exploit this particular technique in all aspects of a distance learning environment.
