The educational culture as a source of problems in distance education: A study case in E.A.P.
Abstract
The national culture as a social reality plays an important role in education, influencing the educational process. Apart from national culture, there is the educational culture, which is defined as a number of specific features which reflect the climate and atmosphere in an educational organization. The educational culture is found on every educational institution. It is a social bond and gives the standard of conduct in the new members of the organization by helping them to foster and develop a sense of loyalty. Without doubt, the educational culture is one of the important factors in shaping the character of the teaching body, affecting the productivity of teachers and the academic performance of students. The investigation of the educational culture in relation to education is particularly highly developed in terms of school climate. The same is not true with regard to the relationship of the educational culture in distance education. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the educational culture of the Greek Open University and in particular in EKP65 module, «Open and Distance Education» can act as a barrier to the learning process in distance education. Utilizing Hofstede’s theory, the dissertation examines Hofstede’s four dimensions: power distance, avoidance of uncertainty, masculinity / femininity and individualism / collectivism. The survey results show that the educational culture can affect the learning process in distance education. Specifically, it affects not only student performance and learning choices, but also behavior and attitude toward the professor and other students.
