Tutor-Counselor stress in Distance Learning: The case of the Hellenic Open University
Abstract
Stress at work has been examined thoroughly in the past few years, since it affects the psychological and physical health of employees, having as a result the influence of the good structure and operation of today’s organizations. The present study looks into Tutor – Counsellor stress in Distance Learning, as conducted by the Hellenic Open University, the only state University offering exclusively distance learning inGreece. The paper examines the sources and factors of stress that derive from the nature of the profession as well as those that arise from the organisation of distance learning studies. The sources and factors of stress are divided into five categories, depending on whether they are: a) the Tutor – Counsellor’s working role b) duty and responsibilities, c) the continuous evaluation he undergoes, d) his relations with other people in the working environment, and e) his relations with adult students.
