Abstract

The current research aims to highlight the state of distance education in the 1970s. The main source of our research was the eighty papers presented during the International Conference entitled "The Open University Conference on the Education of Adults at a Distance", which took place in London, at the Birmingham Metropole Hotel, on 18-25 November 1979. These papers are only available in printed form. Our aim is to capture the authorial and thematic trends taking shape in the scientific field of distance education so that our text constitutes an important contribution to the understanding of the development of distance education during the 70’s and the beginning of 80’s. Our results were obtained by exploring the identity details of the author-researchers, including their gender, country of origin, professional status and research interests. The speakers of the conference came from different countries, offering a diverse picture of the situation in the field of distance education in their respective countries.
