Teachers’ and Students’ communication in a distance learning environment: Hellenic Open University’s Student’s perceptions of feedback in their written assignments

Abstract
Recent reports recognize feedback as an important factor of learning development. The form of the provided feedback is traditionally a concern of the educational institute’s strategy. Students’ opinion concerning an important educational process as feedback is of great importance in a student-centered educational model which is promoted the last years. This study investigates the perceptions of postgraduate students about the feedback that they receive in their assessments, in order to find in which extent they are supported in their learning. The research was conducted to 296 postgraduate students of Hellenic Open University. They expressed their opinions about feedback in terms of form, quality and usefulness. They also expressed their opinion about the form of feedback that they think it could be more effective in their learning achievements. Issues of understanding, communication and educational planning were also been examined. Except from their preferences about the form of feedback that they want to receive and the problems that they face to use the comments effectively, students also made proposals that they believe that can be used by Hellenic Open University in order to improve the feedback process. This study validates relevant field research findings that have been conducted over the last decade.
