Complementary distance learning of Greek traditional dances in Secondary Education using ICT

Abstract

The use of Information Technology and Communication (ICT) in the educational process shaped a new school environment, the school of the 21st century. In the new school, the Physical Education Teachers (PE) have to acquire new skills to integrate them into their course with new forms of teaching. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of complementary distance learning as compared to that o face –to-face teaching, on the development of motor and cognitive skills for the Greek Traditional Dances (Syrto- -Kalamatiano and fast butcher) for Secondary School students of N. Attica. The work also aimed at investigating the degree of student satisfaction in each of the adopted instructional methologies. The action research-based study- involved 33 students of the 1st grade of High School and the participants were randomly divided into three groups. Appropriate educational material was developed for each teaching method, while distance learning was implemented through the online classroom. The evaluation of intervention was done with quantitative and qualitative criteria. The analysis of the data showed that the method of complementary teaching has better results in improving knowledge about dances and also gives greater satisfaction to students.
