The concept of plagiarism in Distance Education and its exploitation in the enhancement of students’ metacognitive skills
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of plagiarism, its detection in distance learning environments and its use in a positive way in order to enhance students' metacognitive skills. More specifically, this paper aims to analyse the role of the software "Turnitin", not only in terms of how students perceive textual similarity but also as a tool to improve academic writing and produce original work. For this purpose, data were used from Master's programme “Education & Technologies in distance teaching and learning systems - Education Sciences” (ETA) of Hellenic Open University. Results demonstrate that use of specific software can help students cultivate their critical and meta-cognitive skills and subsequently to improve their academic writing
