Abstract
The prevalence of emergency remote teaching (ERT) in the educational community, during COVID-19, challenged teachers’ preparedness and skills to respond to the associated educational challenges. The aim of this work was to evaluate, based on the opinions of the teachers, the educational process during ERT, in a school at Chania, with an emphasis on utilizing, for the benefit of the teachers, their weaknesses in relation to e-learning. For this case study, mixed-method research was used. The preparedness of the teachers to respond to ERT, the degree of achievement in the Teaching, Social, and Cognitive Presence, the degree of satisfaction with the design and implementation of the educational process, the use of LMS, their own distance learning experience and the development of 21st-century skills were investigated. Results showed that teachers were challenged due to a lack of timely and adequate training in the instructional use of technology. The necessity to develop and utilize 21st-century skills was highlighted, in order for them to cope effectively with the demands of a modern classroom. They were generally satisfied with the applications and potential of distance education.
