Abstract

The challenges and demands to meet the educational needs during the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the distance education model as an important alternative method of teaching. The purpose of this study is to explore the views of 367 students of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Ioannina on issues related to distance education in the context of their academic studies during the academic year 2020- 2021. Students have answered questions about their level of familiarity and their satisfaction with the provided teaching and learning, the teaching methods and the digital material used by their professors. The results of this research have highlighted students’ satisfaction with the quality of the provided teaching but have also stressed the lack of interaction both among students and between students and their professors, the difficulties in the exams. The effectiveness of distance education is a topic of research by members of scientific community, who study both its potential and its problems, the role of the instructor and the role of the learner, as well as the ways it can be used in traditional teaching.
