Abstract
In the scope of the thesis for the Postgraduate Program “Studies in Education” of the H.O.U. (Hellenic Open Unviversity) during the academic year 2013-2014, the researcher chose the topic of evaluation of the educational material and the related educational work in Higher Distance Education, based on the principles of Quality Assurance, in conjunction with the principles of Open and Distance Education (as the research was applied in an Open and Distance Higher Education Institution, the H.O.U. in specific), and the principles of adult education (as university students are adults). The views of students and Tutors of the Module EKP 62 “Education Units Management” of the H.O.U. were investigated and recorded. The aim of this thesis was to demonstrate the response rates of educational material and the relevant educational work to the three above principles in order to assess and improve their quality. Quantitative and qualitative methodology was followed, for triangulation reasons and to deepen the results of the investigation. To prepare the student questionnaires and tutor interviews, the literature on the standards and evaluation criteria proposed through the Bologna Process, both in the European Higher Education Area (by the European Association for Quality Assurance) and in Greece (by the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency) was reviewed and the specific characteristics which the special educational material and the related educational work must meet in the Open and Distance Adult Education were researched. The results of the interviews are broadly in line with those of the questionnaire, as the educational material partly conforms with the principles of Quality Assurance of Open and Distance Education as well as Adult Education, with a higher response rate in the first two principles, and a lower one in the third. The need to update the content of the educational material and to connect it with the Greek reality were deemed necessary.
