The contribution of Open Educational Resources to Lifelong Learning: A case study for the Centers for Lifelong Learning of the Greek Higher Education Institutions

Abstract
In recent years, the value of Lifelong Learning is universally recognized at national and international level as a strategic priority, providing a vehicle for enhancing citizens’ skills and contributing to the economic progress of the society. Open Educational Resources (OER), as they serve the aims of Open Education, have already penetrated formal education (e.g. tertiary education), while being a crucial pillar and key component in any Lifelong Learning context. In this paper, an analysis of the Lifelong Learning environment in Greece is attempted via a research in progress, which targets the programs offered by the Centers for Lifelong Learning of the Greek Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This research considers six (6) Centers for Lifelong Learning belonging to Greek HEIs and examines the profile of both learners and teachers, such as professional status and education level, as well as characteristics of the offered programs themselves, for example their duration, the kind of training material used, their subject, the learning paradigm used (distance learning, face-to-face, hybrid) and certification. The ultimate goal of the present study is to reveal common features, practices and benefits deriving from the current Lifelong Learning programs provided by Greek HEIs, through the use of OER.
