Abstract
The Golem Effect is a psychological phenomenon of self-fulfilling prophecy that can affect learning process. It is the negative version of the Pygmalion Phenomenon, where low/negative expectations lead to poor performance. This study attempts a literature overview of various studies on the impact of expectations in the learning process in typical education as well as in distance learning. It presents the role of expectations and motivation in the learning process, analyzes the phenomenon of Pygmalion and conceptually clarifies the Golem Effect. Finally, the critical role of negative expectations is identified and conclusions are drawn in order to avoid it.
