Abstract

Collaborative technology-enhanced distance learning is a new research field with international research interest. This paper presents the methodological framework and the results of the study, which was implemented in the framework of complementary formal education through a wiki. The sample consisted of 35 students of two parts of the 1st class of High School (Gymnasium), which they consisted the control and the experimental group. The organization of the Distance Learning Investigation Community was the result of educational planning aimed at enhancing cognitive performance of students in “Language” (Logos) through collaborative writing, as part of the lesson of Language Teaching and Expression. The exploration of students' participation in cooperative writing activities was a) comparing their cognitive performance in Logos (in terms of content, structure and expression) to that of standard class students through assessment rubrics b) analyzing the levels of exploration and deepening of Knowledge, through content analysis of Wiki posts and c) controlling the presence of members of the remote cooperative community, according to the CoI (Cognitive, Social and Teaching Presence) model. The results show that, with the appropriate educational planning, a collaborative learning community can improve performance in the Language, lead to a deeper knowledge and higher score in the three presence indicators.
