Abstract

In the era of information, the advancement of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) has influenced every aspect of life, including education. AI can be applied to enhance teaching and learning processes as well as to address challenges in distance education (DE). Given its rapid development, it is essential to examine how AI can be successfully integrated into educational settings, particularly in remote learning environments. With the swift evolution of AI, many higher education institutions (HEIs) offering online programs are exploring ways to support their instructors. This paper aims to present the benefits and drawbacks arising from the impact of artificial intelligence on conventional education. Subsequently, the close relationship between DE and AI is analyzed to clarify the influence of AI implementation within this educational model. The advantages and disadvantages of AI in DE are also discussed. This article is based on a comprehensive literature review and the analysis of data derived from it. The future of distance education appears promising; however, to maintain its quality, HEIs must develop methods that facilitate interaction and collaboration between instructors and students, ensuring that the learning process remains high-quality, accessible, and flexible.
