Challenges and prospects of artificial intelligence in higher education: A case study in industrial informatics
Abstract
The rapid development of artificial intelligence and particularly the spread of large language models, greatly influences the way students approach the learning process. This paper examines the application of general-purpose artificial intelligence tools in the educational process by students of the industrial informatics course. Furthermore, the degree of students’ experience and familiarity is studied, along with the advantages and disadvantages of these tools through questionnaires, practical exercises and semi-structured interviews. On the positive side, immediate and personalized learning support and the possibilities for creative thinking are counted. However, challenges are also identified, such as issues of reliability, security, academic ethics and dependency on the tools. In conclusion, there appears to be a need for the integration of general-purpose artificial intelligence tools into the educational process, but with targeted pedagogical strategies, which will be incorporated in a responsible and effective way.
