The utilization of teleconference in primary school for a didactic approach in Chemistry
Abstract
This paper is based on a postgraduate dissertation conducted at the Hellenic Open University. The study follows an action research approach, implemented with 5th and 6th grade primary school students (aged 11-12). Teleconferencing was utilized as a means of introducing children to the relatively unfamiliar field of Chemistry, within the context of the Physics curriculum. Students conducted individual hands-on experiments remotely, supported by specially designed educational material developed for this purpose. The research explored the perspectives of students, parents and teachers, focusing on the types of interaction, the extent of learning achieved, and the development of student creativity during participation in teleconferences. The purpose of the study was to: effectively address several limitations of traditional classroom teaching, promote educator’s reflective practice, and foster student’s meaningful learning experience.
