Abstract
On the occasion of a table league’s publication on behalf of Universitas 21 (U21) this article attempts to trace the dialogue among the scientific community on the pros and cons of university global league tables and ranking schemes. Some argue that there is no consensus on what is quality in higher education, the methodology used in the construction of the league tables serving ambiguous aims is perforated and there are concerns that research oriented higher education becomes eclectic away from any sense of diversification. Others though believe that the league tables provide the stimuli to open a discussion on quality assurance in higher education and also for a quality culture to be developed. This article concludes that there is a need to reflect on what kind of tertiary education is needed and desired and to always to know who defines quality, how and what are his aims.
