Εvaluation of the European Maritime Safety Agency’s (EMSA) educational online platform MaKCs on Port State Control

Abstract

A very dynamic professional sector is the one of the Port State Control Officers, whose training has been undertaken by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), providing them, since 2011, with asynchronous distance learning through the MaKCs platform.
The present study aims at the evaluation of this educational online platform, focusing on the assessment of users’ satisfaction. The multi-methological approach has been used and the data has been collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
The data analysis came up with a general satisfaction of the trainees with their distance learning experience, mainly appreciating the omnipresence of the teaching tool “video”. However, certain elements that disappointed learners have been identified, regarding, mainly, the lack of communication and interaction. Thus, a context of specific proposals has been established, targeting at the educational improvement of the platform, as for example, the integration of online communicational tools.
