Avatars in e-Learning

Abstract

The use of computers is becoming increasingly necessary, both at work and in our daily lives. Αnybody can realize this fact easily just having a glance around: laptops, PDAs, smart electronics, NetBooks, mobile, and other gadgets like MP3-Players. For this reason, the new field of educational research focuses on electronic learning.

According to the research of Reeves and Nass (Reeves, Nass, 1996), people have proper social behavior when interacting with computers. The human machine communication, however, differs from the communication between people. People talk and feel in everyday interactions. Therefore, the interaction is entirely different to the standard based on the use of keyboard, mouse and screen. Thus,
e-learning systems enriched with Anthropomorphic Conversational User Interfaces, called Avatars (idols). These idols  are based on artificial two-dimensional or three-dimensional characters.

The use of virtual anthropomorphic idols, called avatars, are longer fact and in distance education systems.
