Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating whether an online collaborative learning environment, structured as Online Learning Communities (OLC), can influence students’ knowledge about the natural environment. Twenty-seven (27) first-grade high school students (both boys and girls) took part in the study, and accomplished an environmental project through participating in the OLC. The students exploited the Internet: a) as an information source, and b) as a communication medium. The CHEAKS (Children’s Environmental Attitude and Knowledge Scale) questionnaire (Leeming et al., 1995), which was validated and adapted into Greek by Malandrakis and Chatzakis (in press), was used to assess the impact of participation in the OLC on students’ knowledge about the natural environment. As revealed by the data analysis, the collaborative learning that took place within the OLC significantly improved students’ knowledge about the natural environment.
