The support of the working environment towards the post-graduate students of the programme Studies in Education of the HOU during their studies

Abstract

This research examined the work environment’s support towards the rights of its members for distance studies. The ex post survey was conducted with a questionnaire with open-ended and closed questions. The population of the survey was the students of the post-graduate program “Studies in Education” of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) during the academic year 2005-2006. The resultsindicate that the support received during their studies was poor, as the students regard that their environment was mostyindiffent. Moreover, they think that they had to face additional problems, mainly emotional, as they experienced distrust, jealousy andindifference, coupled with doubt about the quality of their studies and the recognition of their degree. The students confronted these difficulties with persistency towards their goals and with their family support. The Hellenic Open University could have taken some measures, such as create informative material for the working environment, which would pertain the students’ studies, obligations and educational leaves, as well as the importance of the students’ support from their environment, etc.
