Abstract

Constantly growing demands in the working environment and rapid diffusion of information lead to the people’s need to update their knowledge and to continuously educate and retrain. Traditional forms of education that are not sufficient anymore to cover the needs of modern economy are renewed gradually by adopting innovative educational methods.

A new method that is spreading more and more internationally is Distance Education which is often met as Tele-Education. It is a new philosophy of diffusing knowledge from a distance within the framework of continuing learning, which abolishes limitations of conventional teaching, through the use of modern technologies, and contributes to covering the educational needs that arise before but mainly after the integration of people in the labour market. Moreover, it offers more educational opportunities in a wide spread of adults giving them the chance to determine the time and place of their training.

The program “Centre for Continuing and Distance Education” (CCDE) is included in the framework of continuing education, has been designed by General Secretariat for Continuing Education of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs and is realized by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education. It is a modern system of continuing learning; it aims to personality development, improving of employability and active participation in the financial, social and cultural future as far as a person is concerned and to promoting the development, employment and social cohesion as far as society-state is concerned.

Through the Centre for Continuing and Distance Education (CCDE) the traditional (oral) model of adult education of the General Secretariat for Continuing Education is completed, utilizing the communication and information technologies, creating a model of electronic learning for the adults.

In the present work the data were drawn by the Centre for Continuing and Distance Education of the Prefecture of Trikala, which constitutes a complementary hub in the district of Thessaly; it aims to eminence of Open and Distance Education as a reliable, alternative suggestion to the limitations that the conventional educational system has imposed and the outcome that emerged from the implementation of the programs Communication and Information Technologies and Environment and Sustainable Development in the Prefecture of Trikala during the educational period 2008-2009.
