Telementoring: an alternative capacity of LMSs
Abstract
Key capabilities of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) are portrayed as able to uphold a series of electronically administered services which lie beyond traditional academic provisions to student populations. Based on a recent series of relevant research, the model of such service provisions to e-learners is here presented referring to functions of tele-mentors and tele-counsellors who, via LMSs, may well offer: selective academic plus career advice and holistic psychological support plus personality boosting, respectively – needs, indicated by the students themselves. Following a brief comparison between benefits of f2f vs hybrid learning promoting the latter; and by critical appraisal of partialities favoring behaviourism within the educational reality; this study’s rationale is oriented toward building an integrative psycho-pedagogic approach sustainable through LMSs. It is thus founded on the complex theoretical tenets of: i) constructivism; ii) activity theory; and iii) hardiness principles. The emerging capabilities are examined in conjunction with LMSs’ tools with a view to expand the functionality of these systems to potentially fortify and strengthen the connection of tertiary education institutions with their students towards efficiently encouraging their thriving in life.
