Visual Literacy Using Salmon Approach in Distance Learning Supplementary Secondary Education

Abstract
The current article describes a study case, where a teaching scenario was designed for a students’ e-learning community during an environmental program using distance learning. The sample consisted of students from two schools in Greece and Cyprus, studied contemporary environmental problems of marine pollution through works of art, using Web 2.0 tools as Wiki. The students evaluated the teaching scenario by means of questionnaires and interviews and the reflection journals of the researcher. The views of the students and the teachers were investigated through the inquiry questions on both the usage of images as a teaching tool for critical thinking and the methodology of distance learning. The results, strongly suggest that images can successfully be introduced in an e-learning community and supported by Wiki. It seems that images are an innovative, interesting, and original teaching tool, which gives the opportunity of learning discovery and creative thinking. Initially, students encountered difficulties since they were not familiar with the technique of using works of art in educational process. They had also difficulties in expressing their feelings, when viewing a work of art, but by the end of the process they acquired not only knowledge but also communication, creativity, and collaboration skills. Finally, there are strong evidences that blended distance learning methodology further enhances e-learning communities.
