Perceptions of Higher Education Students Regarding Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9, and 12: The Case of the School of Education Sciences at the University of Ioannina
Abstract
This paper is based on empirical data derived from a recent study conducted with the participation of 188 undergraduate students aged 18 to 24 from the School of Education Sciences at the University of Ioannina. The aim of the study was to explore young people's perceptions regarding the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were established by the United Nations member states as part of the 2030 Agenda, with the objective of promoting sustainable development on a global scale. The present work focuses specifically on Goals 8, 9, and 12, which pertain respectively to decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Through the analysis of students' responses, the study highlights their attitudes, knowledge, and concerns about these issues, while also identifying the challenges associated with the understanding and implementation of these specific goals. The findings indicate that, despite the growing interest of young people in matters related to sustainable development, there remains considerable room for strengthening their awareness and education—particularly regarding the need to balance economic progress with social equity and environmental protection. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of adopting integrated and coordinated policies and educational initiatives to foster the active engagement of youth in building a more sustainable and just future.
