Eco-Schools as a vehicle for the implementation of the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership
Abstract
At the Education Transformation Summit in 2022, UNESCO announced the GEP (Greening Education Partnership) campaign. The aim of the Partnership is to adapt education systems in the context of climate education. FEE's (Foundation of Environmental Education) international Eco-Schools programme is the largest sustainability education programme. UNESCO recognises Eco-Schools as the most suitable programme for Pillar 1 (Greening schools) of the GEP Partnership. Pillar 1 calls for all countries to have adopted a green school accreditation by 2030, with at least 50% of educational institutions holding this accreditation and operating sustainably. As a member of FEE, the Hellenic Society for Nature Conservation is the national operator of the Eco-Schools programme in Greece, since 1994. Based on its experience, the HEPF aims to be the key partner for the achievement of the national objective of Pillar 1 of the Partnership in Greece.
