The new curriculum for the Environmental Studies
Abstract
In 2021, a new curriculum for the Environmental Studies (ES) subject in Primary School (grades 1, 2, 3 and 4) was developed based on contemporary scientific data. The main purpose of the new curriculum is to offer opportunities to young students to develop into modern, active, responsible citizens, with personal fulfilment and development, who, in addition to ensuring quality living with values and with adequate skills that are updated throughout their life, are aware of and interested in global, environmental, humanitarian, and social issues. The learning framework of the ES is organised in a student-centred way, engaging students in individual and group research aiming to new knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values, but also to deepen and broaden the concepts, issues and practices addressed. The teaching framework is organised in such a way as to create an open, flexible learning context for students with activities (individual or collective) that use science practices for their implementation and draw their content from relative to Environmental Studies thematic areas. The paper presents the objectives of the new curriculum, its development philosophy, its main innovative elements, the proposed methodology and suggested practices, as well as some basic results from its pilot implementation in Experimental Schools.
