Study of recycling processes through a serious game and the enhancement of critical thinking

Abstract

This paper presents the investigation of the development of 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, in primary school students during their engagement with a serious game on recycling and material sorting processes. The students of the 5th grade of a primary school in Eastern Thessaloniki first identified from their environment, their books and other sources three different processes that exist for waste management. They were divided into groups and each group took on one of the three recycling processes and through the appropriately designed game, they understood the recycling process they had chosen, presented the experience they had gained from the experiential process, were able to articulate the pros and cons of each process and distinguished the contribution they could make on an individual level to recycling.
