Abstract

The purpose of the present work is to describe the short and long term changes in the Greek labor market during the current economic crisis. During the recent period of Greek credit crisis, several changes in the labour market occurred. The country’s economy collapsed and all sectors exhibited rising unemployment and reduced employment  particularly for the young, the women and the long term unemployed.  The labour market exhibits rapidly falling wages and increased short term or part-time employment. In the public sector there is a limited number of job vacancies, with the majority of them being short term seasonal employment contacts. The ageing population combined with rising unemployment and limited investment foreign creates unfavourable conditions for the development of training programs for the employed and/or unemployed. This negative side effect of the economic crisis should be reversed as human resources development is a prerequisitive for future economic growth in Greece.
