Abstract

Over the last few yearseducation and particularly higher education is under pressure to comply to the principles and directives introduced by the LisbonTreaty. This policy transfers the financial burden  from the state to citizens, under a framework which on one hand introduces private management principles in the management of public goods such as education, while on the other it introduces free market competition rules in the 'knowledge market'. The present work highlights specific consequences of this policy on the university entrance exams, a particular phase of the educational policy in Greece.  The results highlight the basic social and economic parameters which determine the successfull completion of the exams by the prospective University students. The cost of investing in  “knowledge” is placed on the families. Socioeconomic variables have significant effect on quantitative and qualitative aspects of the performance of prospective University students in the generalentrance exams.  The significance of the economic parameters confirm the erosion of the educational process by the  neoliberal  ideology, creating the first barriers of inequality in the access to the Higher education, where the economic and social status of the family, determine to a large extent the success of the students.
