Abstract

Lifelong learning constitutes an expanded scientific field, which includes those activities whereby people learn in a systematic and organized way and acquire new skills and attitudes. This new field of learning activities began to appear in Europe and the United States in the middle of the last century. In Greece, the development of Lifelong Learning is directly linked to the developments that have taken place in the economic, political and social spheres. In this paper, we focus our attention on the key historical strands of this development, focusing our attention on the perspective in the European context. In 2020, Europe's strategy in the field of lifelong learning aims at a sustainable and inclusive growth in which education is called upon to again play a leading role. The rapid changes that mark the modern age in areas such as technology, society and the environment highlight the need to acquire specialized knowledge and skills of citizens in order to meet the constant and increasing demands of their personal and working life.
