Abstract
Promoting energy efficiency in buildings, is one of the main contemporary challenges. However, the examined building is often treated, as a stand-alone case that receives the typical “energy-retrofit treatment”. Basic architectural disciplines that have formulated the built space so far, are often overlooked and disregarded, during the energy retrofit refurbishment. And so does the leading role of the architect, as his background is often considered not scientifically updated enough to comprehend the technical framework of the retrofit measures.
Considering the huge impact of the energy retrofit trend, an opportunity of developing an alternative proposal is arisen. This counter proposal, called Architectural Energy Retrofit (A.E.R.), pursues a wider revitalization of indoors and of its microclimatic surroundings of the building, by invigorating its architectural qualities.
School complexes are considered for A.E.R., an important research field, as they offer a synergy between Architecture and Pedagogical Sciences. Both sectors, provide valuable feedback about formulating a stimulating educational sustainable environment that could also lead an energy saving retrofit strategy. The present paper, will explore how these values are integrated to the bioclimatic behaviour of the school complex. Examples will be presented so as to propose ways of implementing it to the school complex.Article Details
