Artistic and educational dialogues in neighborhoods
Abstract
Issues of space and citizenship run through the Greek national curriculum of primary education. This paper deals with the experience gained from conducting programmes about pupils’ perceptions of their neighborhood in multicultural primary schools in the centre of Athens. It presents the artistic and pedagogical activities undertaken by students throughout the project in three different schools. Pupils work together, explore their neighborhoods cross-thematically and over time. They interact, through their work, with peers from other schools, students of Architecture and municipal organisations. This paper highlights issues related to children’s spatial identities as well as the importance of communication between school settings and the wider community and approaches issues of place through learning by doing. It argues that exploring and negotiating issues of space affect pupils’ empowerment and support open schools to community.
