Inventing playful elements for the city
Abstract
The presentation will attempt to answer the question whether urban planning could propose spaces which can respond to the playful instinct of the child and of the human in general. We will suggest that urban planning could include elements “which are specific to play as: order, tension, movement, variation, formality, rhythm” and that according Johan Huizinga are its basic characteristics, and therefore could become a potential play field.
We will use as examples the design proposals for the covered streams of the town of Rethymno, Crete, and the design of the Aheropeitos – Hagia Sofia Axis in Thessaloniki, where the everyday playful actions are supported.
Through the notions of perception, play, city, nature, art we will attempt the interpretation of our design choices at the works we will analyze.
We consider the introduction of nature and art a design tool in the formation of the urban space, in order to create an environment which develops the imagination, makes art familiar and helps resourcefulness.
