Architecture and Education: Deschooling, Community School and the Children’s rights in the neighbourhood of Exarchia
Abstract
The proposal (of the paper) refers to 35th Primary School of Athens, which is situated in the Exarchia neighbourhood/district and involves Deschooling, the Community School, Participatory Planning on behalf of the children, Architecture, Children’s Rights, Citizenship, Social Networks, Public Sphere, Critical Pedagogy and Institutional Pedagogy. The City Routes bring about the familiarization with the concept of Community, the experiences from spatial representations, the linking of Place with Time (Literature, History, Music, and Science) and the Open Workshop of Natural and Social Sciences. The pedagogical approaches of Building Architecture until recently were merely concerned with the building itself and its specific features. But today we face a transition from the Pedagogy of the Classroom to the Pedagogy of the Schoolyard and the opening up to the community. The concepts of Critical Pedagogy of Spatial transformation and the opportunity of community familiarization guide us out of the school walls through Deschooling in its threefold dimension: the classroom – the schoolyard – the community.
