Perceptions of Time. Using Design as a tool, children re-approach the fourth dimension of space
Abstract
Nowadays, a significantly dynamic factor is emerging in the experience of space, its fourth dimension, the time.
Which correlations could arise from the connection of space and its objects with time? How spatial experiences could be rendered, valuated and organised? How many perceptions of time could there be, and how are they visualised?. The present paper presents an educational program of the innovative Design Lab for Kids, aged from 9-11, organised and coordinated by the Industrial Design Lab of the AUTh School of Visual and Applied Arts, under the primary educational programs of MMCΑ.
The case study takes as a motive the open question “perceptions of time”. Utilising the educational tools of Design, the children go beyond the existing norms of time (Jones 2012). Criteria related to the experience of space, the personal time, are being added, along with their assignation to the everyday life. The design of another clock is not the point of this project. The objects that are being materialised by the children, are aiming to give new perceptions of time.
Time is becoming an important tool to interact with the environment and the everyday activity. The “space for the child” is being enriched, with qualities that compose the “space for the child”.
