“Axion Esti”: multiplex of education and entertainment on the outskirts of Volos. A case study of an alternative school
Abstract
“Axion Esti” is a complex of education and entertainment, located on the outskirts of town, away from the hustle and bustle of the urban environment. Situated on a slope at the foot of Mount Pelion, it affords a panoramic view over the port and the city of Volos.
An 'ark' school combines intelligent design and new technologies while also embracing local culture and the traditional residential styles of the local village of Alli Meria. The complex includes laboratories, conference rooms, recreation rooms and accommodation areas. The outdoor amphitheater, with the city of Volos and the Pagasitikos Gulf as its backdrop, constitutes the physical and psychological focal point of the complex.
“Axion Esti” is not only unique for its aesthetic spaces but also for the function these spaces are designed to perform. They facilitate a wealth of experiences and relationships for students in an environment which stimulates education.
Successfully designing a school, especially an elementary school, requires an intelligent utilization of space so as to invite student curiosity, thereby stimulating learning. With this in mind, we have created an intimate learning environment, able to encourage the innate tendency of children for exploration and willingness to learn. It is an environment that enables everyone to discover his/her own "personal history."
