The new curriculum for the Environmental Studies
Abstract
In 2021, a new curriculum for the Environmental Study subject in primary school (grades 1, 2, 3, and 4) was developed in Greece based on contemporary scientific data. The primary purpose of the new curriculum is to offer opportunities for young students to develop into modern, active, responsible citizens with personal fulfilment and development, who, in addition to ensuring quality living with values and adequate skills that are updated throughout their lives, are aware of and interested in global, environmental, humanitarian, and social issues. The paper presents the objectives of the new curriculum, its development philosophy, its main innovative elements, the proposed methodology, and suggested practices. A discussion is formed based on the innovative features of the new Curriculum, the stakes of its implementation, and the forthcoming writing of textbooks.
