Abstract
This paper aims to study the teaching orientations of teachers and the teaching practices that they use during science teaching in primary school. Through observation of 177 lessons in the last two grades of primary school, the teaching orientations of teachers and the teaching practices used by teachers while teaching were identified. It emerged that the pedagogical orientations of most teachers were consistent with "direct approaches", and the teaching practices often used were lecture-based. It is recommended that teachers become familiar with inquiry-based approaches and with teaching practices that are discussion-based, through professional development programs.
