Abstract
One of the requests of the research was the difficulty of understanding the two types of bond that are taught in upper secondary school. The research was carried out in the school year 2012-2013 in three provincial upper secondary schools. 66 high school students were asked to answer metacognitive questions concerning ionic and covalent bonding. Most students found covalent bonding more difficult. Responses were classified according to Flavell's four categories of metacognition. Most responses belonged to the metacognitive knowledge category, followed by metacognitive experience responses, while few were classified into the projects and goals and strategies or actions categories.
