The mental models of students about force as latent variables: Investigation of the fragmented knowledge

Abstract

This paper investigates the consistency of students' conceptual models regarding the concept of force, as well as the consistency of students' alternative conceptions regarding Newton's 2nd Law, as identified through a literature review. The research was carried out through a 12-question closed-ended questionnaire distributed to 202 students of the 1st and 2nd grade of 4 high schools in Thessaloniki. The purpose of this research is to enrich the dialogue regarding the nature of knowledge and methodological issues, with a view to both the development of research and theory in cognitive psychology and science education and the formulation of appropriate pedagogical approaches derived from them.
