Investigation of children’s mental models using the network analysis method: An application to the meaning of force

Abstract
In this paper, we present a method for investigating students' mental representations based on Network Analysis (NA). Research questions related to the nature of children's knowledge before they adopt the scientific view are examined, and in particular, the coherence of specific mental models of force is investigated. Data were collected using the closed-ended Force-RQ questionnaire from elementary school students. The evaluation of mental representations- networks based on both topology and quantitative measures of network centrality revealed the coherence of specific mental models. The extension of the method to further applications in the field of conceptual change is discussed.
