The utilization of Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens syllogisms by Science students and their correlation with logical fallacies
Abstract
In this presentation, the results of a pilot study examining the use of Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens reasoning by science students are reported. Data were collected as part of a research methodology course using a questionnaire (Rijmen & Boeck, 2003). A cluster analysis was applied to identify distinct profiles based on responses, which resulted in three clusters. The three profiles corresponded to hierarchical levels regarding the correctness of responses and were, subsequently, associated with responses to questions that detected logical fallacies. The results showed that correct use of Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens reasoning was negatively associated with the occurrence of logical fallacies. The findings of the study are discussed in the context of the teaching research methodology.
