Abstract

The necessity of educating charismatic children presupposes and primarily dictates not only curricula adjustment but also appropriately-tailored special education programs. Charismatic children show both signs of intelligence and strong abilities especially in areas of their interest, as long as, they are “traced” in time and are appropriately motivated. Focusing on the Greek educational curricula, it becomes obvious that gifted pupils often attend school classes without their abilities being recognized, nor their needs being sufficiently met, either. As a result, the current school system often fails to take advantage of their potential and, in this way, it disrupts their motivation as well as their school performance. The need to educate talented students arises from the principle that declares equal education for all students, and like all other students, these particular children have the right to receive the best education possible. The present paper therefore attempts both to illustrate the reasons why nowadays it becomes necessary to educate gifted students within the Greek educational system as well as to explore the conditions under which such education is possible and effective.
