Learning Difficulties and Foreign Languages: Student Difficulties and Intervention Techniques

Abstract
An issue that concerns parents and teachers of pupils with learning difficulties is whether they can learn one or more foreign languages. It is often found that pupils with learning difficulties already have difficulty in their mother tongue, so they do not have to be "pressed" by learning a foreign language. A process in which they will encounter difficulties and may have a negative impact on their self-esteem. However, learning at least one foreign language is imperative in modern multicultural society. It enables studying abroad, communicating with other people, facilitating travel, expanding horizons, professional development and helping to understand diversity. The aim of this paper is therefore to present the reasons why students with learning disabilities need to learn foreign languages, as well as the difficulties they will encounter. Next, there will be a reference to the phonological transparency of the most widely used foreign languages in Greece, which plays an important role in choosing the right language for pupils with learning disabilities. Finally, there will be presented suggestions and techniques for teaching students with learning disabilities.
